(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - Over 700 scholars and intellectuals from 100 world countries are to participate in an international gathering on Palestine to be held here later on October, the secretary-general for Conference said Sunday.

Speaking to reporters, Hossein Sheikh el-Islam, the secretary-general for the International Conference for the Support of the Palestinian Intifada said that the two-day fifth conference would begin its work in the Iranian capital on October 1st and 2nd.

The international conference is due to be held on October 1st and 2nd. It will be chaired by Iranian Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani and is expected to be attended also by more than 700 political dignitaries, Palestinian figures and pro-Palestinian activists.

At least twenty parliament speakers from different countries have so far announced that they will participate in this conference.

The conference aims at exhausting all “official and non-official capacities of the Islamic Ummah and freedom-seeking nations of the world in support of the Palestinian nation for the realization of their legitimate rights,” the Iranian organizers said in a statement issued early on September.

The organizers hope that the conference would call enough attention to the issue of Palestine as it come amid the wave of Islamic awakening and popular uprisings sweeping across Muslims countries in North Africa and the Middle East.

The Palestinians staged an intifada (uprising) against the Israeli occupiers of their territories between 1987 and 1993, and embarked on a second Intifada in the 2000s.

A total of 6,200 Palestinians laid their lives in the popular movements, which were fiercely repressed by Tel Aviv.
